Six new episodes of With Love are coming to Prime Video on June 2, and fans are in for a treat. Season 2 of the show promises a more optimistic outlook for Lily’s parents, Jorge Sr. (Benito Martinez) and Beatriz (Constance Marie). After a near-death experience in the finale, both characters have realized the depth of their love for each other and are determined to do whatever it takes to keep their family together.

Constance Marie and Benito Martinez, the talented actors behind Beatriz and Jorge Sr., recently sat down with FilmmakerFocus to discuss the upcoming season of With Love. They shared insights into how their characters will work together to mend their marriage and create a stronger bond in season 2.

Constance Marie & Benito Martinez Talk With Love Season 2

FilmmakerFocus: Out of all the couples in the show, I adored the storyline between your characters the most. They were just a great representation of how love isn’t easy, and you have to work at it every day. Coming into season 2, how might we continue to see Beatriz and Jorge fight for their relationship?

Benito Martinez: Coming into season 2, the recurring theme is that we’re a cog in the middle of the machine—so our kids, our parents, our restaurant, and all the other ventures that we’re a part of. So coming into season 2, our partnership is needed, but we’re also in the part of repairing our affectionate partnership and exploring our sexuality with each other, which is totally unexpected by our children and totally unexpected by the parents. Although, their parents enjoy their sexuality quite a lot. That has been well established. It’s great because, where our characters are in their journey, it’s a wonderful representation of where people our age are at in real life.

They’re in this bubble. There’s stuff below and there’s stuff above, but within your own space, it’s very important, and you have to keep it down, you have to hold it down. You have to make sure all that stuff you’ve worked hard for is still available to you, and you’re planning for your future, and you’re able to celebrate your past, and our characters get to look at each other and go, “That’s my partner.” That person I’ve got to learn to love again, or learn to respect again, or learn to like again, or never forget that person, and yet, also appreciate where they’re at now. They’re not the same person. They’re a new person, they’re a different person, as am I. It’s so well written that just in the rehearsals we’re finding the depth and joy of these characters within the show, because all the relationships are very valid.

Constance Marie: [I’m] piggybacking on that joy, because that’s one of my favorite things about our relationship. In season 1, it was different. It was a struggle, and that is part of the evolution of a long-term relationship. Now, we get to be in the joy of the relationship, which is something that we don’t get to explore very often, and representing some of the sexuality of our generation—we never get to explore that.

And also, how it can make your children uncomfortable when you are a fully rounded sexual being, and that’s also a wonderful part of it. Gloria writes something that is so real that it’s not hard to play. It makes you feel comfortable, and having Benito as a partner, is just a wonderful, wonderful helper for my uncomfortable sexual awkwardness that I might have. [Laughs] But it’s just done all with love. The respect and the integrity and all that representation is all there behind the camera as well. So it was easy, and he was awesome.

Jorge Sr. had a near-death experience in the finale of last season, and it really seemed to affect his outlook on everything. How might that play into how he appreciates life as a whole?

Benito Martinez: Yeah, that’s a great question. One of the things we explore in the second season is the joy of getting a second chance, of starting to appreciate the flowers more. In Jorge Sr.’s life—he’s got a lot of flowers to appreciate, and it’s important that you take care of them. You water them, and you prune them, and you give them that love and care. I think that’s a really great spot where Jorge’s at in that second season. He’s present. He shows up for all the things, and he’s living with his heart on his sleeve. By the time we get to the final episode, it’s gangbusters of just pure, unadulterated love. Love and joy and fun and like, “I’m alive!” It’s all of that.
