Are you ready for an adventure, an ethereal and spiritual journey, a love story, and a heist movie all rolled into one? Look no further than Alice Rohrwacher’s latest masterpiece, La Chimera, premiering today at the Cannes Film Festival. Rohrwacher, a Cannes prize winner for two previous films, has outdone herself with this one.
The film follows Arthur, played brilliantly by Emmy winner Josh O’Connor, as he embarks on a mission to discover a key to the afterlife and reunite with his true love, Beniamina. Along the way, he becomes the leader of a group of grave robbers known as the Tombaroli, who aim to steal treasures from bygone eras and sell them off to fences. But when their latest heist goes wrong, Arthur must navigate a new path and discover the true identity of their mysterious buyer, Spartaco.
The cast is outstanding, with Isabella Rossellini and Carol Duarte delivering standout performances. And Rohrwacher’s direction is nothing short of brilliant, taking the theme of dealing with the past to new and ever-changing levels.
Don’t miss La Chimera, a treasure in its own right and a remarkable addition to Rohrwacher’s impressive filmography.
