Horror on Broadway? It’s a rare sight, with Hollywood usually taking the lead. But Grey House is changing that. This spine-tingling play, written by Levi Holloway and directed by Joe Mantello, is a mash-up of all the classic haunted house tropes, complete with ghostly children, eerie music, and plenty of screams. And with stars like Laurie Metcalf, Tatiana Maslany, and Paul Sparks leading a talented cast of child actors, this show is not to be missed.
Set in a creaky old cabin in the woods, Grey House follows a young couple who seek shelter after hitting a deer on a snowy backroad. But the cabin is far from empty, and the spooky little girls who inhabit it seem to have a telepathic connection that’s downright creepy. As the tension builds and strange things start to happen, the couple realizes they may not make it out alive.
With split-second timing and perfectly ominous pacing, director Mantello keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. And the creative team behind the show is top-notch, with a clever cabin design by Scott Pask, shadowy lighting by Natasha Katz, and haunting sound design by Tom Gibbons.
But it’s the cast that really shines. Metcalf, Maslany, and Sparks deliver standout performances, and the child actors are equally impressive. Sophia Anne Caruso, in particular, cements her reputation as the stage’s go-to girl for all things off-kilter.
Grey House may be new to Broadway, but it’s already making waves. Don’t miss your chance to experience this dark and haunting tale.
