Killing Eve star Jodie Comer takes over Broadway in her powerful performance of Prima Facie, a scorching critique of the legal system, opening tonight at the Golden Theatre. Comer portrays Tessa, a young woman from a working-class background in Liverpool who has risen to become one of London’s most promising defense lawyers through her intelligence and sharp instincts. Her specialty, defending men accused of sexual assault, may have been imposed on her by the cynical male superiors who control the system.
Tessa’s cross-examinations of assault victims, conducted with compassion and empathy, are incredibly effective. Her ability to uncover hidden truths and dismantle a victim’s story makes her an invaluable force in the courtroom.
But Tessa’s world is shattered when she becomes the victim of a violent rape. Despite her knowledge of the legal system, she finds herself trapped in its web of questions and insinuations. Comer skillfully portrays Tessa’s journey from self-confidence to panic as she navigates the long and arduous path to justice.
Directed by Justin Martin (The Crown, The Inheritance, the upcoming Stranger Things: The First Shadow), Prima Facie is a dynamic and empathetic production. Comer’s performance is captivating, as she moves through the set with purpose, rearranging desks and chairs. The play challenges our expectations and explores the crumbling of ideals and self-delusions.
Don’t miss Prima Facie at Broadway’s Golden Theatre. It’s a thought-provoking and unforgettable experience.
