Are you wondering if we really need another take on Peter Pan? Since J.M. Barrie published his book “Peter And Wendy” in 1911, there have been countless adaptations in film, TV, and stage. From silent films to live musicals, Peter Pan has been portrayed by various actors throughout the years. But for me, the version that still resonates the most is the Disney 1953 animated feature classic.
Now, the studio has enlisted director David Lowery to bring a live-action version of the beloved tale. Despite initially resisting the project, Lowery found a way to make it interesting for contemporary audiences. This new version is based on the original book and the Disney animated feature, combining elements from both.
The main difference in this take is that it is completely Wendy-driven. She becomes the force of nature that moves the story forward, embodying the strong female energy usually associated with Peter Pan. While Alexander Molony does a fine job as Peter, I can’t help but miss the spirit and youthful energy of past versions. However, Ever Anderson shines as Wendy, growing confident and touching as the tale unfolds.
But the real highlight of this adaptation is Jude Law’s portrayal of Captain Hook, or James as we learn he was known in his younger years. Law brings a new level of depth to the character, with a backstory that hasn’t been explored before. The rivalry and friendship between Peter and James adds an interesting dynamic to the story, showing how friends can grow apart.
While this version may not be your father’s Peter Pan, it offers a fresh and intriguing perspective. The story remains intact, emphasizing the importance of connection and forging our own paths. With plenty of action, a central swordfight, and beloved characters like Tinker Bell and Tiger Lily, this adaptation has something for everyone.
Kids will surely enjoy this timeless tale, as they have for over a century. David Lowery’s retelling does justice to the impact of a story that will forever remain young. So mark your calendars for April 28th when “Peter Pan & Wendy” streams on Disney+.
