Shazam! Fury Of The Gods Review: DC’s Young Superhero Saga, Headed by Zachary Levi, Retains Humor and Heart

Get ready, because the Shazamily is back and they’re taking things to a whole new level! But don’t worry, at its core, this superhero saga is still all about family, and that’s what makes it so great.

In the origin story of 2019 (which actually dates all the way back to the 1940 comics), a group of teenagers in a foster home found solace in each other and became a family. And when they discovered their alter egos as superheroes, their bond only grew stronger. The first movie, directed by David F. Sandberg, was a hit for the DC brand and even won over the critics. So it’s no surprise that a sequel was in the works, especially with all the changes happening in the comic book world.

This time around, our beloved characters are well-established, with the original stars returning to reprise their roles. But there’s a new set of villains causing trouble, and they bring a touch of female power to the mix. Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu, and Rachel Zegler join the cast as the Daughters of Atlas, Greek goddesses on a mission to reclaim their stolen magic. And it’s up to 14-year-old Billy Batson, played by Asher Angel, to save his foster family and the world by transforming into his superhero alter ego with a simple shout of “Shazam!”

With the awkwardness of discovering their powers out of the way, this sequel dives right into the action. But it’s not all about saving the world. Our heroes also have to navigate the challenges of being teenagers in a world full of bullies and uncertainty about the future. Sandberg and his talented screenwriters, Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan, expertly balance these two worlds, making the teenage side of the story particularly engaging.

Of course, Zachary Levi steals the show once again as the older Billy, who is still just a lost teen at heart searching for his place in the world. And he’s joined by his fellow superheroes, played by Adam Brody, Ross Butler, D.J. Cotrona, Meagan Good, and Grace Caroline Currey. Levi brings the perfect blend of comedy and heroism to the role, much like Paul Rudd does in his superhero films.

But it’s not just the adults who shine in this movie. The young actors who portray the teenage versions of our heroes also deliver standout performances. Jack Dylan Grazer, in particular, steals the scenes as Freddy Freeman, bringing heart and charm to the character.

And let’s not forget about the incredible cast of female villains. Helen Mirren clearly had a blast taking on this role after her stint in the Fast & Furious franchise. Lucy Liu brings a serious and commanding presence, effortlessly riding on the back of a dragon. And Rachel Zegler, known for her role in West Side Story, once again proves her talent as a captivating screen presence.

Oh, and keep an eye out for a delightful cameo from Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. It’s a small but welcome addition to the superhero realm.

Make sure to stay through the credits for some hints about where this franchise might be headed. With James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm, there’s no telling what adventures await our beloved characters. Warner Bros. is releasing Shazam! Fury Of The Gods on Friday, so get ready for an action-packed and heartwarming superhero experience.
