Europe may ban Elon Musk’s Twitter platform if it fails to comply with disinformation rules, according to France’s Digital Minister Jean-Noël Barrot. In an interview on France Info, Barrot emphasized the importance of following guidelines to combat fake news on social media. “Disinformation is one of the gravest threats weighing on our democracies,” he said. Twitter recently withdrew from a voluntary rulebook that included guidelines for big tech companies, including Meta, Alphabet, and Microsoft. Musk has championed transparency and freedom of expression on Twitter, proposing ideas to combat disinformation. One such idea is Community Notes, which allows select users to add notes to tweets and provide more context. However, Musk has not commented publicly on the potential ban of his platform from Europe.
