‘Blue Beetle’ Review: DC Superhero Film Delivers Heart, Humor, and Stellar Cast

The final days of the old era of DC movies at Warner Bros deserve some recognition for going out in style. While some may disagree, I personally found June’s big-screen sensation, The Flash, to be a triumph, surpassing most superhero films. And now, I can confidently say the same for the first-ever cinematic adaptation of Blue Beetle. Despite its release date on August 18, this movie is far better than one might expect.

Under the skilled direction of Angel Manuel Soto, the film boasts a talented cast of Latino actors, led by the charismatic Xolo Mariduena in the titular role of college student Jaime Reyes. Jaime returns home to his close-knit family, only to have his life turned upside down when he becomes the chosen one to carry on the legacy of the Blue Beetle. Reluctantly becoming a superhero with limitless powers, Jaime’s journey is filled with twists and turns.

The character of Blue Beetle has a rich history, dating back eight decades to his first appearance in Mystery Men Comic #1 in 1939. However, it wasn’t until 2016’s Infinite Crisis #3 that the current incarnation of Jaime Reyes was introduced. For his feature debut, the creative team, including writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, decided to give Jaime a modern edge by placing him in the city of Palmera, reminiscent of the iconic “Gotham” style.

In Palmera, Jaime decides to help his family overcome their financial struggles by securing a job at a prominent tech company called Kord. Unfortunately, things don’t go as planned for him and his spirited sister Milagro. However, a chance encounter with Jenny Kord, played by Bruna Marquezine, offers Jaime a glimmer of hope. Jenny, the daughter of Kord’s founder, introduces Jaime to a life-changing opportunity that involves a mysterious box he must never open.

Of course, curiosity gets the better of Jaime, and he opens the box, unleashing the power of the Scarab, which transforms him into Blue Beetle. Confused and overwhelmed, Jaime embarks on a journey to understand his newfound abilities and confront the nefarious plans of Victoria, played by Susan Sarandon, who seeks to create unstoppable fighting machines.

What sets this film apart is its emphasis on the family dynamic. The Reyes family, including Jaime’s ailing father, mother, lively sister, and hilarious Uncle Rudy, played by George Lopez, bring heart and soul to the story. Additionally, the scene-stealing Nana, portrayed by the esteemed Adriana Barraza, adds depth and a revolutionary past to the narrative.

While the film does succumb to the typical third-act chaos seen in many superhero movies, it remains highly entertaining, thanks to its endearing family at the core and Mariduena’s gritty and passionate portrayal of Blue Beetle. Sarandon delivers a captivating performance as the villainous Victoria, avoiding clichés and stereotypes. Harvey Guillen, known for his role in What We Do in the Shadows, brings dimension to his character, Dr. Sanchez, who aids Victoria in her quest.

With DC venturing into new directions, the future of this charming family may be uncertain. However, I hope audiences recognize the heart and humor of Blue Beetle and demand another installment in the emerging Peter Safran/James Gunn universe. This film offers more than the typical genre tropes, showcasing the potential for a fresh and engaging superhero story. That alone should be worth something.
