Federal Trade Commission Accuses Amazon of Deceiving Customers with Prime Subscription Tactics

The Federal Trade Commission is taking Amazon to court over its Prime subscription service, accusing the tech giant of using “dark patterns” to deceive customers into signing up for plans that automatically renew. The FTC alleges that Amazon made it difficult for customers to cancel their subscriptions and enrolled them in Prime without their consent. This “years-long effort” has resulted in a lawsuit against the company. Amazon has selectively reported data for Prime, which boasts over 200 million global subscribers. The FTC, under the leadership of Chair Lina M. Khan, has been cracking down on tech companies and their unfair practices. Khan stated that Amazon’s manipulative tactics harm both consumers and law-abiding businesses. Amazon has yet to respond to the suit. Check out the full complaint here.
