SAG-AFTRA has responded to criticism of its interim agreements, emphasizing their importance in their negotiation strategy and the ongoing strike. These agreements allow independent projects to continue filming during the strike, as long as they agree to abide by the eventual deal reached between the guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
One of the critics, Sarah Silverman, mistakenly referred to actors working on these projects as “scabs.” However, she later admitted on social media that she may not fully understand the situation.
The guild’s negotiating committee is now addressing these misunderstandings and clarifying their position. They refute the suggestion that the interim agreements might prolong the strike, stating that they believe the increased competitive pressure on the AMPTP and the denial of their demands will force them back to the negotiating table and help bring an end to the strike.
The Interim Agreement is crucial for many journeyman performers and crews who rely on it to support themselves and their families. It maintains the guild’s strength, solidarity, and leverage with the AMPTP until they agree to the deal that the guild deserves. It is important to note that the Interim Agreement is not a waiver but a contract that includes all terms and conditions for producers who want to employ guild members on their independent productions.
Each project seeking an Interim Agreement is thoroughly vetted and approved by the union. Regardless of budget size or the cast’s fame, these projects are confirmed to be separate from the AMPTP and entirely independent, except in exceptional circumstances mandated by legal considerations. The terms of the Interim Agreement reflect the guild’s bargaining proposals, including those rejected by the AMPTP.
The Interim Agreement serves multiple purposes, all aimed at protecting the interests of guild members, helping them navigate the strike successfully, and demonstrating to the AMPTP that other producers are eager to work with guild members under these terms.
The negotiating committee emphasizes that the Interim Agreement is a vital part of their strategic approach to the negotiations and the strike. By denying the AMPTP the ability to freely produce their own content, it allows everyone else, except the AMPTP, to work with guild members. They encourage independent producers to apply for the Interim Agreement and urge guild members to work on projects that have obtained it, along with other permissible work supported by the guild.
The guild remains committed to negotiating fair compensation and safe working conditions for its members and expresses gratitude for the continued support throughout the strike.
