“Step into the extraordinary world of Freddie Mercury, the iconic frontman of Queen,” exclaimed Thomas Williams, a Sotheby’s director overseeing the auction of Freddie Mercury’s lifetime treasures. “From his childhood to his final days, his possessions offer a 360-degree view of the man himself.”
Welcome to “Freddie Mercury, A World of His Own,” the captivating auction taking place at Sotheby’s on New Bond St in London until September 5. Among the remarkable items up for grabs is the black lacquered baby grand piano where Freddie Mercury composed some of Queen’s greatest hits, including the legendary “Bohemian Rhapsody.” This piano serves as the centerpiece of the auction, expected to raise millions.
But that’s not all. Over 30,000 objects, artworks, clothing, furniture, photographs, handwritten lyrics, and more are waiting to find new homes. From gold and platinum records to personal Polaroid snapshots, these items provide a glimpse into the life of a music legend.
Freddie Mercury tragically passed away in 1991 at the age of 45, just a day after revealing his battle with AIDS. He entrusted his Kensington home, Garden Lodge, and all its contents to his dear friend Mary Austin. For 32 years, she faithfully preserved his belongings before deciding to share them with the world through this auction.
As you explore the exhibition, you’ll be transported through Sotheby’s 15 galleries, each arranged thematically. From a room dedicated to Japanese art and objects to a faithful recreation of the Garden Lodge dining room, where Freddie hosted extravagant dinner parties, every detail has been meticulously curated. Leather-bound volumes hold the names of guests, menus, and dress codes, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of these gatherings.
“Freddie was not only a phenomenal performer on stage but also a master of hospitality,” Williams remarked. And don’t miss the collection of cat art, ornaments, T-shirts, and other items that pay tribute to Freddie’s six beloved cats, all of whom were once strays.
In the spirit of giving back, Mary Austin will generously donate a portion of the proceeds from the auction to the Mercury Phoenix Trust and the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
