Lin-Manuel Miranda, the acclaimed Tony and Grammy award winner, is setting his sights on his next musical for the stage. According to the New York Post’s Johnny Oleksinski, Miranda is adapting a stage musical version of Sol Yurick’s 1965 novel, The Warriors, which was later turned into a thrilling action film in 1979. This project marks Miranda’s return to the stage since his global phenomenon, Hamilton, which won 11 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, in 2016.
The Warriors holds a special significance for Miranda, as it is set in his hometown of New York City. The story revolves around a fictional street gang who must journey 30 miles from the Bronx to Coney Island in Brooklyn after being framed for the murder of a respected gang leader. While the film version did not feature musical numbers, it did include music by Barry De Vorzon, Joe Walsh, and others.
Miranda’s previous Broadway success includes his debut musical, In the Heights (2008), which won multiple Tony Awards and was adapted into a film in 2021. He has also composed soundtracks for animated films such as Moana (2016), Vivo, and Encanto (both in 2021). In addition, Miranda has been involved in other Broadway productions like Freestyle Love Supreme, Bring It On: The Musical, and the 2009 revival of West Side Story. His talent extends to television and film, with credits including tick, tick… BOOM!, the Emmy-winning Hamilton, His Dark Materials, Fosse/Verdon, We The People, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, among others.
It’s clear that Miranda’s passion for storytelling and music continues to drive him towards new and exciting projects. Fans can eagerly anticipate his adaptation of The Warriors and the unique musical experience he will undoubtedly bring to the stage once again.
