Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) is taking a proactive step to support its members during the ongoing strikes by SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild. In a unanimous decision, the organization’s board has decided to waive dues payments for the current year. This gesture is aimed at helping its members, who are facing economic hardship due to the halt in film and television production.
MPSE, although not a union, is a nonprofit organization that represents professional sound and music editors in the film, TV, and gaming industries. The impact of the strikes on sound editors has been significant, and the board recognizes the challenges they are facing. By waiving dues, MPSE aims to alleviate some of the financial burden its members are experiencing and enable them to focus on their craft.
MPSE President Mark A. Lanza emphasizes the importance of keeping members engaged and connected to the organization. The waived dues will allow members to participate in educational seminars, Sound Advice webinars, and other events that enhance their skills. The goal is for members to be fully prepared and at the top of their game when the strikes are resolved, ready to contribute as premier sound artists.
For MPSE members who have already paid their 2023-24 membership dues, the organization will credit those dues to the following year. This ensures that no member is disadvantaged by the waiver.
MPSE maintains a neutral stance on the strikes but hopes for a swift and amicable resolution. The organization looks forward to all parties being able to return to the work they love, once the disputes are settled.
In related news, the Writers Guild will be returning to the bargaining table on Friday, while SAG-AFTRA has been on strike since July 14. The industry eagerly awaits a resolution that will allow production to resume and talented individuals to get back to creating captivating entertainment experiences.
