Central Casting Addresses Online Chatter Regarding Likeness Agreement, Clarifies It as Outdated Internal Marketing Requirement

EXCLUSIVE: Central Casting Responds to Backlash Over Photo Release Form

Central Casting, a leading casting agency specializing in extras and stand-ins, is facing criticism from SAG-AFTRA members over its 20-year-old photo release form. Actors are concerned that by signing the agreement, they are giving up control of their digital likeness. This comes at a time when both SAG-AFTRA and WGA have expressed concerns about the increased use of AI and generative technology in Hollywood.

The wording of the agreement has sparked outrage among actors, who have taken to social media to share screenshots and warn others not to sign it. The agreement grants Central Casting the right to use actors’ images, appearance, likeness, voice, and actions in any medium, without their approval. It also waives any right to inspect or approve the finished product incorporating these recordings.

Actors are particularly alarmed by the language that releases Central Casting from any liability and waives any personal or proprietary rights they may have in connection with the use of their recordings. They are also concerned that all recordings, regardless of medium, will remain the property of Central Casting, and they will not receive any compensation for their use.

When asked for comment, Central Casting stated that their photo release form has been in use for over 20 years and is intended for casting purposes. They emphasized that it does not apply to production companies or their businesses. Central Casting’s primary mission is to find entry-level work for up-and-coming actors, and they have no plans to abandon that mission.

The reaction to the agreement has been mixed, with some actors expressing outrage at the lack of compensation for the unrestricted use of their likenesses. Casting director Alexis Winter created a video urging actors not to sign the agreement, highlighting the potential for Central Casting to sell their likeness to any production they are hired by.

SAG-AFTRA Negotiating Committee Member Frances Fisher also weighed in, stating that the guild did not approve of such a move and encouraged actors to reach out to SAG-AFTRA for support. The guild has been seeking assurances from the AMPTP that digital replicas of background actors will not be used without compensation.

This is not the first time actors have expressed concerns about the intersection of casting and AI. Last month, actress Charisma Carpenter drew attention to an email she received from Largo.ai, a company offering AI casting services. Carpenter’s fear was that AI casting would replace traditional intermediaries like casting directors, agents, and managers.

In response to the backlash, Largo.ai CEO Sami Arpa clarified that their program was only meant for a limited beta release and that they are actively collaborating with industry professionals. Arpa emphasized that their objective is to enhance the capabilities of casting directors and talent agencies, not replace them.

The use of AI tools in the industry is a topic of ongoing debate, with proponents arguing that it can create more job opportunities and improve the industry as a whole. However, actors and industry professionals remain cautious about the potential implications and are advocating for fair compensation and protection of their rights.
