In an exclusive interview with FilmmakerFocus, Isis King and Todd Grinnell share their experiences working together to bring the time jumps and family dynamics of Sol, Miles, and Charlie to life in With Love season 2.
Isis King & Todd Grinnell Talk With Love Season 2
FilmmakerFocus: The show has a lot of time jumps in season 1, so is that something that will continue?
Isis King: Yeah. While season 1 was based on holidays—and season 2 does have some holidays—it’s more like big life moments that you’ll see. If you watch the end of season 1, you know that something’s going to happen around a wedding ring. So in season 2, you’re going to see some really big moments that show the family all doing different things.
As actors, how does that affect the way that you play the relationship between Sol and Miles? Do you discuss what may have happened during these gaps of time?
Isis King: In season 1, in one episode we kiss, and then the next episode is a few months later, and we’re in a relationship. So I think season 1 got us used to it, and allowed us to think, “Okay, it’s been six months. Where are they now?” And we kind of have had those moments where we’re like, “They’re really in love now, so let’s play it as so.” I love that Gloria always allowed us the freedom to figure it out as well. It was really fun to kind of collab in that way.
Todd Grinnell: It’s almost like a puzzle. Because if you skip months ahead in a script, you read the script, and then you have to go back and say, “Okay, well, we’re here now,” and the writing is so brilliant that we’re already in great spots. You pick up, and it’s very easy to play. But at the same time, you kind of have to go back and go, “Well, we kissed in that episode, and now we’re in bed,” and so you have to imagine all the other things that happened in life in those months that have passed, and it’s kind of fun to fill in those blanks.
Todd, I love how great of a father your character is to Charlie and how attached Charlie has become to Sol as well. What do fans have to look forward to in regard to that family dynamic?
Todd Grinnell: Yes, you’re going to see Charlie come back. You’re also going to see Charlie’s mom. They’re played by Busy Philipps, which was so fun, and that leads to a whole other story. It’s really fun.
Isis King: It was a really fun episode and Busy was a hoot to work with. She kept making me break, and it was just a fun time for sure.
Sol didn’t get to have too many scenes with Lily and Jorge outside the family events. Will we be seeing more of that trio in season 2?
Isis King: I feel like you’re going to see more, especially with Sol and Jorge. In season 1 we mentioned how usually the queer cousins have a connection, or the queer family members in real life—that’s how it is in my family. So you’re definitely going to see them have moments. I’m especially looking forward to Sol and Jorge having a really warm moment in one of the episodes that’s just so sweet.
What else can you tease about the season? Is there a certain episode you’re excited for fans to see?
Todd Grinnell: Oh, man. I’m excited for everybody to see every episode. There’s so much to look forward to and I think fans are going to be really happy with how the season unfolds.
There’s so much to look forward to in this season of With Love. The relationship between Miles and Sol becomes even more real and relatable, and Miles learns a lot along the way. They’ve had their ups and downs, but they always come back together, and their bond is even stronger. I think viewers will find it really inspiring and fun to watch. It’s a mix of hilarious, sexy, and heartwarming moments.
Isis King, who plays a character named Smiles, says that Team Smiles is coming back strong, just like Todd said. There will be a lot of ups and downs, as is natural in relationships when you open up new doors and face different situations. With Sol and Miles, you’ll see a lot more of those sweet moments, but also the real moments where they have to set boundaries and have difficult conversations. And of course, there are some fun moments too. In real life, we’re all so relaxed, so it was really fun to kind of yell at Todd.
