Exciting news for music lovers! The Recording Academy has just announced three new categories that will debut at next year’s Grammy Awards, and one of them is Best African Music Performance. This category is a nod to the incredible popularity of Afrobeats recordings worldwide, and it “recognizes recordings that utilize unique local expressions from across the African continent,” according to the organizers.
But that’s not all – the Recording Academy is also introducing awards for Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording. These changes reflect the Academy’s commitment to staying aligned with the ever-evolving musical landscape and accurately representing a diverse range of relevant musical genres.
Afrobeats artists have been making waves in the music industry lately, collaborating with superstars like Beyoncé, Drake, and Ed Sheeran. And it’s no wonder – stars of the genre like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Tems have each garnered Grammy nominations, with Burna Boy taking home the prize in 2021 for his album “Twice as Tall.”
We can’t wait to see who will take home the trophy in the Best African Music Performance category next year. Stay tuned!
