Court Rejects Request to Postpone Release of ‘The Blackening’ Due to Lack of Evidence in Copyright Lawsuit Against Lionsgate Film

Get ready for some horror-comedy fun because The Blackening is hitting theaters! Despite a lawsuit against Lionsgate, a California judge denied a request for a temporary restraining order to delay the release of the film. The plaintiffs claimed that the movie infringes on their copyrights for a screenplay called Southern Education and a card game called Black Card Revoked. However, the judge ruled that they failed to make their case and that the plaintiffs “have not demonstrated any substantial likelihood of success on the merits.”

In the film, a group of friends on a Juneteenth getaway stumble upon a creepy board game called The Blackening. Things take a dark turn when a twisted killer forces them to play the game or risk the life of one of their own. The movie stars Grace Byers, Jermaine Fowler, and Jay Pharoah, among others, and is directed by Tim Story.

Despite the lawsuit, The Blackening is expected to have a successful opening weekend, with projections of $6 million-$8 million. So grab your popcorn and get ready for a wild ride!
