The letter is signed by notable actors such as Kevin Bacon, Quinta Brunson, Glenn Close, David Duchovny, Chelsea Handler, Eva Longoria, Jennifer Lawrence, Bob Odenkirk, Mark Ruffalo, Meryl Streep, Rami Malek, Patton Oswalt, Sarah Polley, Parker Posey, Amy Schumer, Kyra Sedgwick, Chlöe Sevigny, and Ben Stiller.
The guild is currently in the final week of bargaining for a new film and TV contract, with the current contract set to expire on June 30. SAG-AFTRA leaders have expressed optimism about reaching a fair deal, but the actors in the letter emphasize that this is not a time for compromise. They urge leadership to fight for the change and protections they deserve, and if necessary, to join the Writers Guild of America on the picket lines.
The letter comes on the heels of a rare show of solidarity within SAG-AFTRA, as the two leading political factions have formed a unity slate to endorse the reelection of President Fran Drescher and Secretary-Treasurer Joely Fisher. This unity follows the unanimous vote of the guild’s board to recommend a strike-authorization vote, which was overwhelmingly approved by 98% of the membership.
