‘Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny’ Rakes in $130M Worldwide Debut at International Box Office

Refresh for latest…: Brace yourselves, because Disney/Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is off to a disappointing start with a global opening of $130M. While it managed to rake in $70M from 52 international box office markets, the fifth installment in the beloved 42-year-old franchise fell short of expectations. But don’t worry, we’ve got all the details on why this happened.

Let’s start with the domestic launch, which unfortunately hit the bottom rung of the range. However, overseas, the picture is pretty much as predicted, although still worse than expected. Europe is performing well overall, except for France, which has been affected by early cinema closures due to riots. On the bright side, Japan, where older audiences lean into nostalgia, has been good, though not phenomenal. Meanwhile, Latin America and Asia Pacific are a bit lackluster.

But wait, there’s more! We expected nothing out of China, and that turned out to be the correct bet. The market has no history with Harrison Ford’s adventuring archeologist and is currently focused on local titles. The three-day gross in China was a paltry $2.3M.

Now, let’s talk about the movie itself. The James Mangold-directed entry originally premiered at the Cannes Film Festival back in May, where it received tepid reviews. However, audience reactions have been better, but unfortunately, the movie just didn’t hit the mark.

But it’s not all bad news. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny opened as the No. 1 non-local film in all major European markets and had the highest debut of 2023 in Finland, Denmark, and Greece. Across Asia-Pacific, it claimed the top spot in various countries including Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand. In Korea, it came in second place behind the improved performance of Disney/Pixar’s Elemental. In Latin America, Dr. Jones scored No. 1s in Argentina, Ecuador, Central America, and Uruguay.

The Top 10 opening markets for the film are the UK, France, Japan, Korea, Germany, Spain, Australia, Italy, China, and Mexico. IMAX screenings brought in $11M globally, with $5M coming from overseas.

In other news, Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken also made its debut this week. The kids movie was released in 67 markets, grossing a total of $7.6M and surpassing Spirit: Untamed. The worldwide start for the film was $12.8M. Notable performances were seen in Mexico, UK, Spain, France, and Germany.

Moving on to another film, Elemental has been gaining momentum in the past two weekends. It grossed an impressive $29.8M from 40 offshore markets, bringing its international cume to $98M and global total to $187M. The drop in offshore markets was just -7%, and when excluding China, it was only -3%. Several markets even saw increases in box office numbers.

The Top 5 markets for Elemental so far are Korea, China, Mexico, France, and Australia. There are still more releases to come, including the UK and Spain this month, and Japan in August.

Lastly, Paramount’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts continues to perform well, adding another $14.9M in 65 markets. The film has now reached $245.2M internationally and $381.3M globally. It’s worth noting that this movie is the second biggest ever in Peru, where it was partially shot.

Exciting times in the world of cinema! Stay tuned for more updates.
