Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino is fully embracing Elon Musk’s decision to limit the number of tweets users can see each day. In a tweet, Yaccarino expressed her support, stating that making significant moves to strengthen the platform is crucial for Twitter’s mission. The social network also released an official statement, explaining that the limitations are aimed at combating bots and spam.
“To ensure the authenticity of our user base, we must take extreme measures to remove spam and bots from our platform,” the statement reads.
Over the weekend, Twitter users were surprised when the platform experienced glitches without much explanation. According to Twitter’s statement, the company chose not to provide advance notice to users because it could have allowed bad actors to alter their behavior to evade detection.
The rate limits are designed to prevent bots from scraping public Twitter data and manipulating conversations on the platform. Currently, only a small percentage of users are affected, and Twitter will provide updates as the work progresses. The statement also reassures advertisers that the impact on advertising has been minimal.
While the initial limits restricted verified users to reading 6,000 posts a day, unverified users to 600 posts a day, and new unverified accounts to 300 posts a day, Elon Musk later reported that the limits were raised to 10,000 posts for verified users, 1,000 for unverified users, and 500 for new accounts.
Interestingly, Twitter’s statement coincides with Meta’s preparation for the launch of a direct competitor called Threads, set to be released on July 6.
