West End ‘Cabaret’ Revival Set for Broadway Debut in Spring, Casting Yet to be Finalized

Get ready, Broadway fans! The Olivier Award-winning West End revival of Cabaret is making its way to the big stage. Producers have just announced that this incredible musical will begin previews at the August Wilson Theater in spring 2024.

While it hasn’t been confirmed yet, there’s been a lot of speculation about whether the original stars of the West End production, Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley, will be joining the Broadway cast. Redmayne’s recent participation in a Tony Awards tribute to Cabaret composer John Kander and actor Joel Grey has only fueled the rumors. Grey, who played the Emcee in the original Broadway production and the 1972 movie version, is a true legend of the show.

But that’s not all! The West End revival, officially titled Cabaret At The Kit Kat Club, dominated the 2022 Olivier Awards, taking home an impressive seven wins. This includes Best Musical Revival, Best Actor and Actress in a Musical for Redmayne and Buckley, and Best Director for Rebecca Frecknall. Elliot Levey and Liza Sadovy also won Supporting Actor and Actress in a Musical, making this production a true powerhouse.

The London revival is produced by Underbelly and Ambassador Theatre Group, two major players in the West End. And here’s some exciting news: Ambassador recently merged with Broadway’s Jujamcyn Theaters, which owns the August Wilson venue. This means that the Broadway production of Cabaret is in excellent hands.

While Redmayne and Buckley may have left the production in 2022, the show must go on! Fra Fee and Amy Lennox took over their roles, followed by Callum Scott Howells, Madeline Brewer, John McCrea, and Aimee Lou Wood. Currently, the West End production stars Maude Apatow and Mason Alexander Park, who are sure to bring their own unique flair to the stage.

For those unfamiliar with the story, Cabaret is based on John Van Druten’s play I Am a Camera, which was adapted from Christopher Isherwood’s semi-autobiographical novel Goodbye to Berlin. The musical features music by Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and a book by Joe Masteroff. It’s set in 1930s Berlin and follows the lives of the performers at the infamous Kit Kat Club.

If you’re a fan of the 1972 film adaptation starring Liza Minnelli, Grey, and Michael York, you’ll be thrilled to know that all the iconic musical numbers are included in the stage production. From the title song to “Mein Herr,” “Maybe This Time,” “Tomorrow Belongs To Me,” “Willkommen,” “Two Ladies,” and “If You Could See Her,” get ready to be transported to the dazzling world of Cabaret.

So mark your calendars and get ready for an unforgettable night at the theater. Cabaret is coming to Broadway, and it’s sure to be a showstopper.
