Meanwhile, the Writers Guild’s strike is still ongoing, with no end in sight. Many striking writers have been hoping for SAG-AFTRA to join them in solidarity, as it would put pressure on the studios to meet their demands for a fair share of profits. The strike will affect films and scripted TV shows worldwide, excluding soap operas. According to the guild’s Global Rule One, members cannot work for employers who haven’t signed a basic minimum agreement with the union.

Despite agreeing to bring in a federal mediator, the guild expressed doubts about the employers’ intentions to reach an agreement. They accused the AMPTP of manipulating the situation and abusing their trust. The decision to strike was made after 98% of SAG-AFTRA members voted in favor of it. The Directors Guild has already ratified their own new contract, adding to the pressure for SAG-AFTRA to take a stand.

SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher, who chairs the negotiating committee, faced criticism for her absence during negotiations. However, it was revealed that she was fulfilling a prior commitment as a brand ambassador in Italy. She has been actively involved in negotiations and will continue to lead them upon her return.

The guild’s key bargaining issues include economic fairness, residuals, regulating the use of artificial intelligence, and addressing the challenges of self-taped auditions. SAG-AFTRA aims to ensure fair compensation for its members, protect their rights, and secure a meaningful share of the profits generated by their work.

Artificial intelligence poses a threat to the work of SAG-AFTRA members, as it can mimic their voices, likenesses, and performances. The guild is determined to establish agreements that protect against misuse and ensure fair compensation for the use of members’ work in training AI systems. They also seek to address the challenges and exploitation associated with self-taped auditions.
