The San Francisco Department of Building and Inspection has been met with resistance from Elon Musk’s social media company, formerly known as Twitter, as they attempt to inspect the new black “X” logo on the roof. For two consecutive days, the company has denied access to the structure, creating a push and pull between the city and Musk. This comes after Musk officially changed Twitter’s name to X as part of a major overhaul following his $44 billion acquisition in October.
Earlier this week, city officials were unable to remove the iconic blue-bird sign and logo from Twitter’s headquarters on Market Street. Without a permit filed, only the “er” from the Twitter logo remained, and one of the birds had been de-blued.
Moving forward to Friday, a large black X was erected on the building’s roof, resulting in a notice of violation for work done without a permit. Any replacement letters or symbols must have a permit to ensure they align with the building’s historic nature and are securely attached to the sign, according to Patrick Hannan, spokesperson for the Department of Building Inspection.
According to the department’s complaint page, the inspector assigned to the case spoke with representatives from the company and building maintenance engineers. Despite explaining the complaint investigation process and requesting access to the roof area, the company declined to provide access, stating that the structure is a temporary lighted sign for an event. The inspector emphasized that the structure must be removed with a building permit or legalized, as stated in the notice of violation.
On Saturday, the inspector made a second attempt to gain access after conversations with the property manager. However, access was once again denied by the tenant. As a result, the original notice of violation was redrafted and reissued.
Despite these challenges, Musk posted a picture of the lit X logo on the roof of his X page, expressing his commitment to keeping X in San Francisco. He acknowledged that many have offered incentives for the company to move its headquarters out of the city, but he affirmed that X will not be leaving. Musk emphasized that true friends are revealed in difficult times and declared that X will always be a friend to San Francisco, even when others forsake the city.
