The iconic “X” sign that once adorned the San Francisco headquarters of the social media platform formerly known as Twitter has been taken down, marking the end of an era. According to reports, the sign was removed on Monday following complaints from local residents. It seems that what was once a symbol of the company’s presence has now become a nuisance and a safety concern.
The San Francisco Department of Building Inspections received a total of 24 grievances regarding the sign, ranging from it being a mere annoyance to a potential hazard. In response, building inspectors witnessed the structure being dismantled. The property owner will now face fees for the unauthorized installation and removal of the illuminated sign, as well as for the investigation conducted by the Department of Building Inspection and the Planning Department.
This incident is not the first time the company has faced scrutiny for its actions. A notice of violation was issued on July 29, citing the lack of a permit and the unsafe nature of the building. Officials had attempted to inspect the metal structure on multiple occasions, but access was denied.
Despite the challenges faced in San Francisco, Elon Musk, the CEO of X (formerly known as Twitter), has stated that the company will not be relocating its headquarters. In a tweet over the weekend, Musk mentioned that many other cities have offered enticing incentives for X to move, but they remain committed to San Francisco. Musk expressed his loyalty to the city, stating that even in difficult times, they will stand by San Francisco.
So, while the bright “X” may no longer mark the spot in San Francisco, the company’s dedication to the city remains unwavering.
