Clarence Avant, known as the “Godfather of Black” music and entertainment, has passed away at the age of 92. His family, including son-in-law Ted Sarandos, the Co-CEO of Netflix, confirmed the news with a heartfelt statement. Avant peacefully passed away at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday.
Avant was a revolutionary leader in the worlds of music, entertainment, politics, and sports. His business acumen earned him the affectionate nickname of “the Black Godfather.” His legacy will continue to shape the world for generations to come, as he leaves behind a loving family and a vast network of friends and associates. While we mourn his loss, the joy of his legacy brings comfort.
The news of Avant’s passing comes nearly two years after the tragic shooting death of his wife, Jackie Avant, at the age of 54. Avant himself was a trailblazing music executive, film producer, and entrepreneur. His remarkable story was depicted in the 2019 Netflix feature, “The Black Godfather,” directed by Reginald Hudlin. The film received critical acclaim and was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for its outstanding original music and lyrics, written by Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo.
Born in North Carolina in 1931, Avant began his career in the music industry in the 1950s. He managed several successful singers, including Little Willie John. He later worked for Venture Records before founding Sussex Records two years later. In 1971, Avant established Avant Garde Broadcasting and became the first Black owner of an FM radio station in metropolitan LA during the 1970s.
Throughout his illustrious career, Avant received numerous accolades. In 2016, he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 2021, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A video tribute featuring Barack Obama and Kamala Harris accompanied his induction.
Avant married Jacqueline “Jackie” Alberta Gray in 1967, and they had two children. Their eldest daughter, Nicole Avant, served as a U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas and is married to Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos.
