Miley Cyrus is getting real about why touring isn’t her cup of tea. In a series of videos called Used To Be Young on her TikTok account, the former Hannah Montana star reveals that her experience as a cheerleader actually helped her cope with life on the road.
“People don’t really understand that touring isn’t just the 90-minute show, it becomes your entire life,” Cyrus explains. “When you’re performing at such a high level, you need equal amounts of recovery and rest. There’s this ego that comes into play during tours, and I feel like it gets overused. Once that switch is on, it’s hard to turn it off. Training your ego to be active every single night is the toughest part for me.”
She goes on to say, “Being constantly observed and judged by others isn’t healthy for me. It erases my humanity and connection, which are essential for me as a songwriter. That’s my priority.”
This isn’t the first time Cyrus has expressed her dislike for touring. Earlier this year, she made it clear that she has no desire to hit the road again, not because she’s disconnected from her fans, but because she wants to prioritize her own happiness.
“It’s been a while,” Cyrus told British Vogue about touring. “After my last headline arena show in 2014, I started questioning it. And I realized, I can’t. Not only because I physically can’t, but because I don’t want to. Do I want to live my life solely for the pleasure and fulfillment of others?”
Cyrus also points out that performing is not a natural state for her. “It’s isolating because even if you’re in front of 100,000 people, you still feel alone.”
