‘Dumb Money’ and ‘I, Tonya’ Director Craig Gillespie Joins CAA

EXCLUSIVE: Get ready for the highly anticipated release of Craig Gillespie’s latest film, Dumb Money, hitting theaters this Friday. Following the success of his critically acclaimed movie I, Tonya, which delved into the controversial life of Olympic skater Tonya Harding, Gillespie is back with another underdog story filled with thrilling drama and hilarious moments.

Previously represented by UTA, Gillespie has now joined forces with CAA for representation in all areas. He directed and produced Dumb Money in collaboration with Sony and Black Bear, and the film made its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this month, receiving rave reviews from both critics and audiences. After a limited release on September 15, the movie is set to go wide on September 29. But that’s not all – it will also be screened at prestigious film festivals such as the San Sebastian International Film Festival and the Zurich Film Festival in the coming weeks.

Now, let’s talk about the star-studded cast of Dumb Money. Written by Lauren Blum and Rebecca Angelo, the film features Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, Nick Offerman, Pete Davidson, Sebastian Stan, Shailene Woodley, America Ferrera, and Anthony Ramos. Together, they bring to life a gripping drama with comedic elements, centered around the GameStop stock squeeze that shook Wall Street and brought down a billion-dollar hedge fund. Based on Ben Mezrich’s book The Antisocial Network, this adaptation tells the captivating story of how a group of amateur investors took on the financial giants and made millions from GameStop, a struggling video game retailer.

Gillespie, originally from Australia, has an impressive filmography that includes the recent Disney hit Cruella starring Emma Stone, with a sequel already in the works. However, it was his breakout film, I, Tonya, released in 2017, that truly put him on the map. Starring Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan, Paul Walter-Hauser, and Allison Janney, the movie received multiple Academy Award and BAFTA nominations. Gillespie has also directed notable films such as Lars and the Real Girl, The Finest Hours, Million Dollar Arm, and the remake of Fright Night.

In addition to his success in film, Gillespie has made waves in television as well. He served as the director and executive producer of the Emmy-nominated Hulu limited series Pam & Tommy, which explored the infamous sex tape scandal. The series starred Lily James and Sebastian Stan. Gillespie also took on the role of executive producer and director for Apple TV+’s Physical.

It’s clear that Gillespie’s talent and versatility have earned him a well-deserved place in the entertainment industry. While he embarks on this exciting new chapter with CAA, he will continue to be represented by Warren Dern at Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern and Narrative PR. So, keep an eye out for Dumb Money as it hits theaters and prepare to be captivated by Gillespie’s unique storytelling style once again.
